Historiquement le mot bâtard était employé pour désigner un enfant adultérin ou illégitime, c'est-à-dire conçu hors des normes sociales.

Sous l'Ancien Régime, les bâtards nés dans le peuple étaient privés de la particule de leurs pères.

Leur sort n'était guère enviable, mais il s'améliorait à mesure que ceux ci s'élevaient par instinct;

les Bâtards de France naissent, sont, écoutent, voient, sentent, touchent, goutent, se déplacent et obtiennent la reconnaissance de leurs pairs.
